Twitters 140 Characters is Expanding!!

The news that we have all been waiting for finally came out last week……. The 140 character limit on Twitter is expanding! The character limit is still staying the same but links, pictures and mentions will no longer apply to this limit.

Before this expansion links and pictures each took up 24 of the 140 characters meaning if you wanted to create a tweet with a picture and then direct someone to a website link then you only had 92 characters left to play with.

What does this mean? If you regularly use Twitter then you will know the stress and limitations of trying to fit everything you want into one tweet. This change will mean people can now write more in each tweet to describe pictures, videos, link content etc. while still keeping what makes Twitter great!

If you have any questions on social media or on this new twitter character limit then drop us a tweet at @hoopla_uk

Tips and Tricks to get Social Content Appearing in Google Search!

When searching for a business online we are now able to see so much more than just their website, instead we are able to find information such as news stories, customer reviews, client feedback and company updates. This flood of new content on Google search is now heavily influenced by social media channels and companies who ignore social will be hindering their SEO and overall digital marketing efforts.
The way in which people conduct their online searches is also changing with people now turning to social media channels. According to KissMetrics “Twitter handled 19 billion search queries a month ……that’s more than 5x the queries handled by Bing!”.

This massive increase in people using social media for search means that it’s more important than ever to ensure your company profiles are up to date and valuable content is shared.

Below are 4 tips on how you can improve your company social media channels to increase your visibility when people “search”:

Tip #1 Make sure your media channels have personality and look professional and appealing to your audience. If you have a few different social media accounts then make sure they all link with each other and fit with your brand theme.

Tip #2 This new addition to Google Search is all good and well if you are using the right keywords in your social media posts however if you’re not then your competitor might be taking your customers from right under your nose! Using the right keywords that are relevant to your business, product, service and industry is very important and even more so now that Google will rank your social media pages based on the keywords you are using. Look at what is in you bio and about us pages on your social media profiles… are your keywords in there? Is your location up to date? The more keywords and detailed information you can put into your profile the better.

Tip #3 Utilising content that your target market will find valuable and can interact with is key. By developing a high value content plan with posts that people can interact with increase the reach and impressions of your brand. It also helps if the post has a link to your website so when people are sharing the content through social media there’s a higher chance of people clicking onto your website, therefore driving more traffic and positively influencing your Google rankings.

Tip #4 There is nothing worse than seeing a post with too many hash tags as it looks unprofessional! However including a few related hashtags to the topic you’re posting about is vital to increasing the reach of your posts. We recommended that you use no more than 3 hashtags and ensuring they aren’t too big! Keep it short and simple! Conduct some research into #hashtags that are relevant in your sector and which your customers use. We work with a range of event companies and a brilliant hashtag to take part in is #eventprofs.
Social media pages are more personal than a website or a link on Google, but keeping it professional still is crucial! So next time you're posting on social media think about the above key points, it could get you organically higher up the Google search.

Top branding tips for small businesses

Your brand is more than just a logo, it reinforces your company values, personality and quality of service to your customer. It's also a well known fact that loyal customers will consistently purchase a product or service from their preferred brands, regardless of convenience or price, so it's important to get it right from the beginning.

Naming your brand
Choose your brand name very carefully as it can have a detrimental effect on your overall brand awareness. The name you choose should reinforce the key elements or objectives of your business. The more your name communicates to consumers about your business and what it provides, the less effort you must exert to explain it.

If you have decided on a name for your business do some research to find out who else might be using your brand name,  whether or not your desired name is available to be trademarked and don’t forget to check if it’s available as a domain name, which you can do at 123-reg.com. If you’re torn between a variety of names, try doing some consumer research or testing with focus groups to see how the names are perceived.

Designing your logo
In most circumstances your visual identity or logo will be the first impression for the consumer, so it’s very important to get it right. If you’re not a graphic designer, avoid the DIY approach and invest in a professional designer to create and develop your logo.  If you are working with a small budget, make use of websites such as Fiverr.com orPeopleperhour.com to find a freelance designer to suit your desired style and budget.

Consistency is key
Every element of your business becomes a part of your brand, it’s not just a case of deciding on a name and producing a logo. Your brand needs to flow through every part of your business. Create a set of brand guidelines containing guides on your chosen colour palette, fonts, tone of voice along with other elements such as how your brand will be used on employee uniform, marketing literature and advertising. Keep your brand consistent across all media channels.

Know your audience
Before you can truly form a relationship with your customers, you need to know your audience. Who is your perfect customer? What are their interests? The more you know about your audience the easier it will be to maintain brand loyalty. Think about your tone of voice and how your brand will interact with consumers. A well-defined voice will impact the different stages of the consumers buying experience and should implemented across all media, social channels, and even customer support.

5 Reasons Why Your Business Should Be Using Periscope!

Periscope is one of the latest arrivals to the social media landscape! With its catchy tag line stating that you can “Explore the world through someone else's eyes.” The app allows you to live stream all across the globe instantly from your mobile device …….good internet connection permitting of course ;)  It is revolutionising the way businesses and people broadcast, no longer is there a need for a webcam or camera studio! It can be broadcasted at the push of a button on your smart phone.

So how can you utilise Periscope to market your business?

1. You can create real-time engagement with your viewers!

A great example of this is BMW USA’s “Whatsnext” live-action adventure campaign. The "Whatsnext" campaign invited viewers to steer the moves of pro rock climber Alex Honnold and National Geographic photographer Jimmy Chin as they took a day-long road trip in a BMW X1. The pair has set out together in the vehicle and came to various obstacles where the Periscope followers where able to help them decide which path to take on the adventure.
This campaign utilisation of real time has enabled them to develop a relationship with the viewer, show the benefits of the product and increase engagement by getting them involved in the campaign.

2. Provide viewers with high value content

Keeping your audience updated with the latest news is now essential in this modern era of instant information gratification. Using video apps such as Periscope allows you to show viewers high value content that they cant get anywhere else such as live Q and A’s, instant interviews, behind the scenes clips, live event footage and new product launches.
This high value content also gives the viewer an opportunity to interact with the brand and develop a closer relationship with the company.

3. Connect With Influencers

Periscope is a brilliant channel for enabling you to connect with the influencers in your industry. You are able to keep a close following on key people; interacting with them through their broadcast by leaving insightful comments, asking questions and spreading the word about their broadcast through your social channels. A useful tool is the ability to turn on the push notifications for that individual, allowing you to be alerted every time they are posting something new.

4. Humanize your brand

Being authentic and getting across your brand’s personality is an essential strategy in today’s fast moving world. Periscope allows you to show the people and the personality behind the brand. Then your customers are connecting with a real person, not just a brand or an account. This personal connection builds “know, like and trust” at a fast rate and people buy from people they know, like and trust!

5. Access to a whole new audience

Periscope gives you access to a whole new follower base that you might not have had before; an audience that don’t engage with you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. This is a broad new audience such as marketers, business owners, competitors etc. that digest their information differently through visual cues.

How to market your business using Snapchat

You might be under the impression that Snapchat, the photo video sharing app is just for your funny selfies, food pics and five second flashes. However, Snapchat has become the new innovative way to reach, interact and connect with your audience.

With over a billion views of Snapchat each day, this growing social media platform is becoming an important part of the marketing strategy for many businesses. Currently more popular with a younger demographic (18 to 34), Snapchat has over 100 million active users and there’s plenty on offer for companies who want to engage with a wider audience.

What is Snapchat?
Snapchat is a social media platform that allows you to share photos and videos, with the added capability that you can create captions, draw over and now add special effects to your pictures. It is similar to Instagram except that images last only a few seconds before being deleted (or 24 hours if you use Snapchat Stories) and are used more as a form of conversation rather than straight photographs. This might at first seem like a negative for businesses but Snapchat base their model on the fact that most social media posts are transitory and have a short shelf life.

Tip 1) Get to know Snapchat
It’s important to think like a Snapchat user: Why are we on the app? How are we using the app? If you appreciate the format then you will start to understand what works best and most effectively. Snapchat is an informal social channel, built on immediacy, amateur pictures, silly videos, creativity and FUN!

Tip 2) Build valuable content for your followers
Don’t forget your audience is in control! You need to keep them interested as they have the power to tap on and tap off you. There are plenty of ways to engage with followers on Snapchat and it’s not all about personal promotion. You need to post imaginatively and produce content that is interesting, informative and engaging, including:

  • Posting tutorials that show how to use your product.
  • Linking to new, exciting content on your webpage.
  • Updates from events or meetings that your company is involved in.
  • Shots demonstrating how your product works or looks in real life including from user generated content.
  • Sharing great tips for your industry or commenting on current news events.
  • Show your audience behind the scenes such as insight into employee culture

Tip 3) Engage and nurture
You don’t get anywhere on social media if you don’t engage with your audience. If you have a large number of subscribers then it’s not possible to reply to every snap that comes in but certainly making the effort as much as you can is important. That means following people back and, to some extent, nurturing them to engage more with your content – it’s a great way to uncover brand ambassadors who are happy to spread the word about your latest product.

Tip 4) Don’t be afraid to be creative
One of the great features of Snapchat is that it allows you to draw, write and add special-effects to images. This gives your brand the opportunity to be more creative and add some humour to the mix. It’s a bit like putting graffiti on the wall – for example, use your latest promotional poster and touch it up with some additional prose to make it more eye catching and relevant or take a picture at the office meeting and scribble a quick comment.

Tip 5) Embrace the time limit
The time constrained characteristic of Snapchat can work in favour to the marketer, giving you back the power to limit what the audience can see. You could send sneak previews to create an exclusivity approach to your Snapchat audience, generating excitement, customer loyalty and a buzz around your brand.

Tip 6) Run a Competition
Get your fellow Snapchatters to engage with you by running a competition. A selfie of them using your product in unusual places, for example. Getting the best out of user generated content to make your brand seem fun and desirable is one of the key strategies you might want to put in place for all social media.

Tip 7) Use other platforms to grow your following
One of the differences with Snapchat is that it’s a little more difficult to build a following – there are no hashtags, search or traditional ways that other platforms use for discovering new users. Advertise on your main website and send invitations out to your other social media followers to join you on Snapchat to build your reach.

Here are just some of the brands that are using Snapchat in a range of diverse ways:

Cosmopolitan

Cosmo is one of the few brands that have the honour of being on the ‘Discover’ section of the app; exploring editorial perspectives from 15 unique channels. Cosmopolitan’s daily editions allow you to tap next or swipe up to see more, giving you an insight into the latest celebrity news and interesting stories; similar to their magazine, website and app.

Sour Patch Kids

The Candy brand, owned by Mondelez, let vine star Logan Paul host the brand’s Snapchat ‘Story’  for a five day campaign. This allowed the brand to connect and reach out to a young teen audience who became hooked on the story updates of Logon’s journey around New York pulling pranks. These pranks varied from ‘Sweet’ pranks to ‘Sour’ pranks, which incorporated with their tagline ‘First they’re sweet, Then they’re sour’.

Amazon

Even Amazon has got its teeth into Snapchat, using the app to show the ‘human’ side to the company with employee selfies, amusing problems and relatable activities, all allowing the global brand to connect and interact with their diverse worldwide audience.

With an increasing number of followers and growing popularity, Snapchat presents numerous ways for businesses to engage with consumers with quirky and imaginative posts. Its immediacy makes it a lively platform that requires thought and a good deal of devotion but can, if used well, make a big difference to your social media marketing strategy.
